After getting enlightened and leading the world to the path of peace, truth and love, Lord Gautam Buddha took his last breath at Kushinagar, India on 7th May (Buddha Jyanti). Lord Buddha died and got Nirvana on the same day when he was born. Many emperors, people ans animals as well as god and goddess came and attend his funeral.
So on 7th May, The Light Of Asia left the body and went to the heaven.
Therefore, 7th May is the huge Day for the Buddhist, as all the essential incident of Lord Gautam Buddha occurred in this day. So Buddhist to pujas in the monasteries and jatra of the statue of Lord Buddha. On Buddha Jyanti people remember the contribution of Lord Buddha and thank him as well as practicing the lessons taught by the Gautam Buddha. For the Buddhist all over the world, Buddha Jyanti is the huge occasion and on this day people accept their mistakes and sins and ask for forgiveness. On this day people also many good works like feeding animals, afforestation etc.
Tamang caste of Nepal take Buddha Jyanti as a starting of new year and celebrate as Sonam Lhosar.
